stopping to smell the flowers

This morning, I saw and appreciated something that I want to emulate.
As I went for a walk around Green Lake, just north of Seattle, there was an elderly woman who was getting into her car. She was putting a walker into her trunk first, then slowing lumbering her way towards the driver door. She had shiny white hair and was wearing an off-white suit. I knew it was off-white, because her hair was brighter.
As she had parked on the end spot near her apartment complex, there was some greenery immediately on her left, just next to the driver door. Even though she was obviously lumbering, and could not move with ease, she still managed to lean down to just below the level of her knees - and to take her left hand to move a pretty flower in the nearby shrubbery, and to smile as she looked at it.
I doubt she had any idea anyone could see her. Her smile was genuine and peaceful. It was like she had a moment of forgetting that she no longer was able to move around and walk, like the rest of us that were just trying to get some exercise and walk around the lake on a pleasant, sunny, Sunday morning.
I like that. I always want to remember to stop and smell the flowers. It’s worth it, and it makes life so much more pleasant.
